BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial for a man charged with shooting his pregnant wife and killing their unborn child.

Frank Atkins, 28, of Baton Rouge, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of the child. If convicted, he faces life in prison. The trial is scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Atkins is accused of shooting his wife, Kayla Atkins, several times while sitting in her car on Bay Street on June 19, 2012. Police said she was in the passenger seat, her cousin was driving and there was a 3-year-old in the back seat.

Family members said Kayla Atkins was four months pregnant at the time and the baby died hours after the incident. The shooting left her paralyzed.
