ABBEVILLE, LA (WAFB) - Two men have been arrested for the shooting death of a Vermilion Parish Sheriff's deputy that happened Monday.
The family identified the officer to KLFY in Lafayette as Deputy Allen Bares Jr. of Erath, LA. Deputy Bares was a 12 year veteran of law enforcement.
Deputy Bares was off duty and was cutting grass around 4 p.m. near the intersection of West Cougar Road and South Hospital Drive in Abbeville Monday when he called in a report about two suspicious people.
When a deputy arrived to investigate the suspicious people, he found Deputy Bares had been shot. During a news conference in Abbeville on Monday at 1 p.m., Louisiana State Police officials say Deputy Bares identified himself as an officer and that is when he was shot. Reports say he was shot multiple times.
Louisiana State Police have identified the suspects as 20-year-old Quintylan Richard and 19-year-old Baylon Taylor.
Richard is facing charges of first-degree murder, unauthorized use of a movable and simple burglary. Taylor will be charged with first-degree murder.
Authorities say Richard is believed to be the shooter. The District Attorney says they will seek the death penalty because the charge is first degree murder of an officer.
Sheriff Mike Couvillon said a witness reported seeing a gold Lexus that had crashed in a ditch in the area and two men driving away in the deputy's pickup truck with a utility trailer and lawn mower. The truck was later found abandoned.
Additional arrests are expected as this is still an ongoing investigation.
