SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Shreveport mother who lost her son to domestic violence is hoping to turn a terrible tragedy into a positive message.  She's also hoping it will bring more awareness about domestic abuse.

Ursula Brantley's 3-month old son Terrell Jermaine Thorton, was killed by his father in June of 2008. On Tuesday June 24th, nearly 5 years to the date of his death, Brantley will host the First Annual TJ Fun Day to honor victims and survivors of child abuse.

Anyone is invited to attend the event. There will be face painting, carnival type activities and free food.

Brantley says the death of her son changed her life forever.  "It doesn't really hit you until it hits home and when it hits home, you just start seeing it more and it started affecting me more and I know that this one day is not going to change the whole world, but it will get people to thinking and maybe it will get people to change their actions."

The event will be held at the XOA Dance Studio on Linwood Avenue from 5-8 PM.

Grady Thornton was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Terrell Thorton and is currently serving a life sentence.  He admitted to hitting the child because he was crying.
