ST. ROSE, LA (WAFB) -

An asphalt production facility, jointly owned by Shell Chemical and IMTT is the source of an odor that has plagued a community in St. Charles Parish for the past ten days, according to state officials.

On Thursday, June 6th, people from the St. Rose community gathered outside of the governor's mansion, demanding answers about a plant leak in the St. Charles Parish area.

The community joined with the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, calling for Gov. Bobby Jindal to take action. The group claimed that the Calumet Plant is leaking chemicals that are making people sick and creating an unbearable odor.

The Louisiana Department of Environment Quality said that the increased levels of gasses like hydrogen sulfide, are not enough to cause bodily harm.

Jindal responded, saying his office spoke with the companies. Parish officials say the two companies have already taken steps to eliminate the problem. Until then, they say they will continue to monitor the situation.
