ST. ROSE, LA (WAFB) - People from the St. Rose community gathered outside of the governor's mansion, demanding answers about a plant leak in the St. Charles Parish area.
The community joined with the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, calling for Gov. Bobby Jindal to take action. The group claimed that the Calumet Plant is leaking chemicals that are making people sick and creating an unbearable odor.
The Louisiana Department of Environment Quality said that the increased levels of gasses like hydrogen sulfide, are not enough to cause bodily harm. However, the group wants Jindal to visit and see for himself.
"You always see the top leadership on sight when there is an emergency. We have an emergency; we need the governor," said Anne Rolfes, founding director of the Bucket Brigade.
Jindal responded, saying his office spoke with the plant company.
"We've been in contact with the company today. They should be releasing something about the fact that this should not be reoccurring," said Jindal. "This should have been a one-time event but they are monitoring the air quality and again, there will be consequences if they violated the permits or violated the regulations."
