BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An alleged attempt to smuggle drugs into prison was foiled by a recorded phone call, according to authorities.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office reported Carlos Powell, 31, is charged with introduction of contraband into a penal institution.

Warden Dennis Grimes with the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison reported deputies monitor all phone calls to the prison and overheard an inmate talking to a woman about a plan to get drugs behind bars.

The woman allegedly agreed to pack tennis balls containing synthetic marijuana and other items inside and throw them over the fence. Three days later, drug-filled tennis balls were found on the prison grounds.

Deputies questioned Powell and officials said he confessed. They are working to identify the woman involved.

More information about this investigation will be released later in the day.
