BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Brazil is not the only place welcoming hoards of soccer players and fans, as Baton Rouge is gearing up for regional soccer championships.

Paul Arrigo, president and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge, wants to extend a warm welcome to visitors.

"You'll see them shopping, you'll see them in restaurants, in retail malls, what have you," Arrigo said. "And let's be nice and say, 'Hello, welcome to Baton Rouge,' like we do with every other organization we've got coming to Baton Rouge."

The city is expecting more than 3,000 soccer players for the 2014 Youth Soccer Region 3 Championships.

The opening event will be held Thursday and then the tournament begins on Friday.
