One dead after vehicle goes into water off Atchafalaya Bridge

IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - State Police confirm one person dead after a truck flipped over the guardrail into the water on the Atchafalaya Bridge Westbound between Whiskey Bay and Ramah exit in Iberville Parish.

The accident happened just before 8:15 p.m. Friday night.

Investigators say Lois Rudd, 24, of Largo, FL, was driving west on I-10 on the Basin Bridge when her vehicle veered to the left and hit the south guardrail.  Rudd overcorrected causing her vehicle to roll on its side and hit the north guardrail, where it then went over the side of the bridge.

There were six people in the vehicle with Rudd.  One passenger, Mina Bell, 25, of St. Petersburg, FL, was pronounced dead at the scene.  There were also five children in the vehicle ranging in age from 5 weeks old to 9 years old.  A 7-year-old in the vehicle suffered severe injuries while the others suffered moderate injuries.  All were taken to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

Rudd remains in the hospital, recovering from her injuries. Once she is released, she will be into the Iberville Parish Jail for 5 counts of negligent injury, negligent homicide and careless operation.

Troopers believe excessive speed was a factor in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
