BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The East Baton Rouge Council on Aging has started collecting fans and air conditioner units as part of its annual "Beat the Heat" drive.

New fans and A/C units can be dropped off at the following fire stations:

Baton Rouge - 5758 Claycut Road, 4025 Perkins Road, 555 Government Street, 835 Sharp Road and 4121 Harding Boulevard

Any St. George Fire District Station

Central Fire Department main station (11646 Sullivan Road)

Baker Fire Stations

Zachary Fire Department main station (4525 Main Street)

Officials said more than 700 fans and A/C units were collected last year and they expect more than that this year. Money is also accepted.

The agency stated there is criteria in place to determine who will receive fans or A/C units. Only one fan or A/C unit will be given per household. Also, you must be at least 60 years old or disabled to receive a fan or A/C unit.  Care Managers assess the homes of potential recipients.

The Council on Aging will hand out the donated fans and A/C units at its main office at 5790 Florida Boulevard from 8:30 a.m. to noon throughout the summer, until all of the items are gone. People are asked to bring proper identification when picking up a fan or A/C unit.
