BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Authorities said the special needs child found wandering around an apartment complex alone Thursday morning will be released to her mother.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said it happened at Jefferson Lakes Apartments, which is located near Jefferson Highway and Airline Highway. Deputies were called around 7:30 a.m. about the four or five-year-old girl who was wandering around the complex in pajama pants and a t-shirt.
EBRSO Public Information Officer Casey Hicks said the girl was believed to be special needs because she could not tell the deputies her name.
The child was taken to the Office of Child Services until the parents or guardians could be found.
Officials reached out for the public's help in identifying and locating the child's parents. They said they received information from the community and found the girl's mother.
"As soon as WAFB sent out the breaking news alert, calls started coming into the Sheriff's Office and we were able to locate the child's mother," said Hicks.
Deputies spoke with the child's mother and learned she was at work and had allegedly left the child with a family member who lives at the complex.
