Educators honor 2014 Volunteer of the Year at governor's mansion

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An invite-only reception at the Governor's mansion was held in honor of the winners of the 2014 'Volunteers of the Year' awards.

The award is given by the professional educators' organization, A+PEL.

Two winners are from Baton Rouge. Pam Morgan is the president of the Cortana Kiwanis Club. She is also a VIP reading friend for a child at Broadmoor Elementary.

"My student is so glad to see me that she runs to greet me at the door," said Morgan.   "And there are an awful lot of other children who want the same attention because they'll wave and raise their hands and say, 'Please read with me today,'" she added.

Melissa Mancuso volunteers at the Louisiana Key Academy in Baton Rouge because the school has helped her daughter make meaningful progress in her studies.

"You make a difference, you really do and you don't really realize it until you get where we are today," said Mancuso.

A+PEL chose honorees from more than a dozen parishes.
