Services set for former State Representative Melvin Irvin

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Services are set for former State Representative and former Ascension Parish School Board President Melvin Irvin Jr.

Irvin, the first African American elected as school board president and the first African American  Representative for District 58 in 1983, died Saturday at his home in Gonzales after a battle with cancer. He was 72.

Irvin also started Ascension Parish's first Urban league, the River Road Urban League, and he was founder and president of the River Area Improvement League.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 12 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hopeful Triumph Baptist Church, 38584 Highway 22 in Darrow.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 13 at Christian Assembly Full Gospel Church, 42158 Louisiana 941 in Gonzales. Viewing begins at 9 a.m. and the services start at 11 a.m.
