SLIDELL, LA (WAFB) - A fight between two families at a Slidell, LA restaurant left two people shocked with a stun gun, one person grazed by a bullet, several people injured and nine people arrested.
According to Slidell Police, they received a 911 call about a large fight around 8 p.m. outside of Cheddar's Casual Cafe.
Police say the two families did not know each other, but started after one family was waiting for a table allegedly made degrading comments about another family who was leaving the restaurant.
The fight quickly escalated. The two families, juveniles included, began fighting each other. At some point, 32-year-old Shawn Sorrell pulled out a stun gun and shocked two members of the opposing party. She then retrieved a .380 caliber handgun and fired one round into the fighting crowd.
Reports say an innocent bystander, who was attempting to break up the fight, was grazed in the leg by the bullet; however, no one was directly hit.
"Based off witness statements, it was apparent that Ms. Sorrell, who is now facing attempted first degree murder charges, was aiming for the crowd," said officials with the Slidell Police Department in a news release.
When police arrived, reports say one officer was attacked while trying to arrest one of the fighting suspects and other officers chased suspects running from the scene.
"Due to approximately 20-30 people actively fighting, Slidell Police called for additional backup from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office in order to assist and restore order. When everything was finally under control, nine people were arrested, and more arrests are expected to be made," stated in the news release.
Chief Randy Smith says, "This is an unfortunate incident, and we're lucky no one was killed. Things obviously quickly escalated out of control, and it took every available officer to restore order. As you can see by the arrests that were made, we are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior in our city. I am dedicated to keeping the citizens of Slidell safe, and will do whatever it takes to do so."
