Teach for America educators help clean up neighborhoods

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Teach for America educators are working in East Baton Rouge on various service projects Tuesday.

More than a dozen teachers are volunteering at Children's Charter School painting the school cafeteria and THRIVE Boarding Charter School on Government Street. They are also landscaping and cleaning up the neighborhood as a part of the Mayor's Love Your Block Program.

"These are new teachers who are just starting their summer training," says Michael Tipton, executive director of Teach for America. "They've done a lot of reading, a lot of preparation, but this is really an opportunity for them to get to know the great people that do work and education throughout our area and to start to get to know the schools in the communities in which they're going to work for the next two years and beyond ."

More than a dozen of Teach for America's newest teachers are working throughout the parish before they begin summer-long training.
