BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Some local mothers are getting a second chance at life from behind bars.
Nine women graduated Tuesday from the Reconnecting Families parenting classes at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. The women who take part in the program get parenting lessons to help them reconnect with their children while incarcerated.
When they complete the program, the women get to spend an entire day at a carnival set up on the grounds of the prison with their children.
"The joy is having the whole day with their child," said Dennis Grimes, EBRPP Warden. "Here we only have non contact visits but today they get the opportunity as the place is set up like a carnival to spend the whole day with their child touch them and be able to talk to them which gives them the joy and satisfaction and being able to motivate them to do better in life."
This is the sixth year the event has been held at the prison.
