Common Core survives despite governor's opposition

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The use of Common Core education standards survived a fierce battle this year-despite Gov. Jindal urging lawmakers to scrap it and it's companion standardized test.

Common Core puts Louisiana on par with the rest of the nation, but the governor doesn't seem too convinced it's the best option.

"I think it would be a mistake to rush to those standards in Louisiana," Jindal says. "We did support legislation that would've delayed those standardizing giving Louisiana folks time to come up with our own standards, our own exam. Unfortunately, those two specific bills did not get through the process."

Testing over the next two school years will be used to figure out where Louisiana students score. As of now, the test scores will count in the 2016-2017 school year for Common Core.
