BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Police were called to the Our Lady of the Lake emergency room after a 2-year-old girl was brought in with severe bruising on her face, back, chest, and ears.

Medical officials reported the toddler's eye was swollen shut and an open wound was found underneath her eye.

The mother, 26-year-old Sophia Lira, who does not speak English, told a Spanish speaking officer that she does abuse her child when she gets angry. She told officers that she was pregnant and she loses her patience and hits the 2-year-old girl.

When the officer asked Lira about the injury to the child's eye, Lira said the child fell off of a truck, then later said the child fell out of the bathtub and hit the toilet. Reports say Lira later admitted the wound on the child's eye was because it was swollen and she rubbed ice on it.

According to the probable cause report, Lira told police she does hit the girl on her back, and pull her ears and arms.

Lira told police that she is the child's primary care giver and under her care at all times.

Lira was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and is being held on a $20,000 bond.
