Driver charged with negligent homicide in death of unrestrained child

THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) -

A Baton Rouge child was killed in a crash Tuesday morning in Thibodaux, LA and the driver has been charged with negligent homicide. There were two adults and three children in the vehicle.

The crash happened around 9 a.m. on LA 1 near Waverly Road. The driver, 35-year-old Jermaine Wooden of Napoleonville, was traveling south on LA 1 and passed several vehicles in the northbound lane. Deputies say when Wooden tried to reenter the southbound lanes, he lost control of his vehicle and went off the road to the right.

Officials say Wooden, Danielle McPherson, 31, of Baton Rouge, David Rollack, 8, and Darrin McPherson, 6, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police say they were all wearing seat belts.

When the vehicle rolled over and the 11-year-old child was ejected. Deputies say she was not wearing a seatbelt. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from Wooden and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.
