BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A second victim has died in deadly crash when a vehicle veered off I-10 and landed in a bayou early Friday morning, May 23rd.
The Louisiana State Police reported that 50-year-old Karen Matherne of Gonzales succumbed to her injuries from the crash. Matherne, who was the front seat passenger, is the second fatality from the crash. LSP reported earlier that Armand Marchand IV, 45, also lost his life.
According to Tpr. Jared Sandifer, the 2004 Cadillac SRX that Marchand was driving veered off I-10 East near Highland Road (LA 42) around 12:30 a.m. Troopers reported the car went into Bayou Manchac and sunk.
The victims were rushed to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital where they later died.
Investigators said Marchand was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. They added they do not know if impairment was a factor.
Per protocol for deadly traffic crashes, a sample of Marchand's blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
The section of I-10 East between Highland and Prairieville was shut down until around 4 a.m.
