(RNN) - Shelly Sterling, the wife of embattled Los Angeles Clippers co-owner Donald Sterling, will negotiate a forced sale of the team, CNN and ESPN are reporting.

Citing an anonymous source, CNN said the NBA has been in discussions with Shelly Sterling, who agreed with her husband to negotiate the sale.

The NBA was preparing a vote by the other team owners that would force the Sterlings to sell the team. The NBA filed charges earlier this week to end Sterling's ownership, and a hearing was set for June 3 in New York after which the board of governors would hold a vote.

Donald Sterling earlier indicated that he would fight the move to terminate his ownership, but a source told ESPN he had changed his mind and would allow Shelly Sterling, a co-owner of the team, to negotiate the sale.

Donald Sterling was banned for life and fined $2.5 million by NBA commissioner Adam Silver on April 29 after the billionaire made remarks against blacks in a taped conversation with girlfriend V. Stiviano.
