NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - The day after a sudden shakeup within a police department, the county's prosecutor shared his thoughts about alleged corruption in an agency he deals with every day.

Prosecutor Keith Henderson said he will ask for a thorough review of the New Albany Police Department once a new police chief has been appointed.

"For their benefit, they need to have good leadership back in place to where things can move forward," Henderson said.

Resignations and reassignments for NAPD's chief and assistant chief occurred a few weeks after allegations of corruption and retaliation.

"Once the matter is settled on whose going to lead the department and that person gets settled in, I'll have a discussion with them," Henderson said.

The chief and assistant chief of NAPD suddenly resigned from their appointed positions Tuesday. The resignations and reassignments were effective immediately.

Henderson would not elaborate about the leadership change. However, he assured reporters during a brief news conference that if he finds NAPD's investigation into alleged corruption and mismanagement is incomplete then he'll take additional action.

"Clearly if I think something needs to be done further in an investigation or if I think they're not doing an investigation and it needs to be done then I will make sure that happens," Henderson said.

Major William Popp is handling NAPD administrative operations until a new chief is appointed, according to a news release from Mayor Jeff Gahan's office.
