Baton Rouge Police warn residents about calling scam

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Police are warning residents to be aware of an 876 area code calling scam.

Police say they've have handled several cases involving the call which claim the victims have won a large amount of money or a new car. The caller tries to get the victim to purchase a green dot card.

Once the card is purchased, the caller asks for identifying numbers on the card. After the victim gives the information, they're told they will receive the car or money and it will be delivered to their home. This never happens.

Police say while many calls are reported, a lot of them go unreported because the victims are elderly or embarrassed.

The 876 area code is from Jamaica.

If you've been a victim, call BRPD Financial Crimes Division at (225) 389-3871.
