Hamels, Brown lead Phils past Reds

By Brett Bibbins

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Cole Hamels (1-2) earned his first win of the year and win number 100 in a Phillies uniform as the Phillies (18-22) beat the Reds (19-22) 12-1 Saturday night.

It was Hamels' best outing of the season as he threw seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and striking out ten. This is Hamels' second straight start of seven innings, 10 K's and only one run allowed. With this win, Hamels becomes the seventh pitcher in Phillies history to secure 100 wins.

"He was sharp on both sides of the plate and with the full arsenal," Reds manager Bryan Price said.

On the flip side, Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey (3-3) had his worst outing of the season, giving up six runs on seven hits in only 3.2 innings pitched.

"Sometimes that's just the way it goes, but you still have to make good pitches and unfortunately, I did not," Bailey said after the game.

The Phillies were shut out last night in game one of this series by Alfredo Simon, but they more than made up for that lack of production tonight. Philadelphia scored 12 runs on 13 hits, including four doubles and two homeruns.

Phillies left-fielder Dominic Brown had a big day at the plate, going two-for-five with a double, a homerun, five RBI and two runs scored.

Ryan Ludwick put Cincinnati on the board in the first inning with an RBI groundout, scoring Zack Cozart who had doubled earlier in the inning. The Reds jumped out to an early lead for the sixth game in a row, but for the third time in those six games, couldn't go on to win the ballgame. The Reds managed only one hit after that first inning in tonight's loss.
