BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - If you drive between LSU and Downtown on Nicholson Drive, you may have recently noticed that people have been walking in and out of an overgrown piece of land.
There are thousands of berries just waiting to be picked. Some people have spent hours in here, picking blackberries. Willie Dent Jr. and his brother have been picking berries every year since they were kids growing up in Port Allen.
"This is one of the biggest patches that I've seen within 10 years or so," said Dent, "This year I guess the cold weather held them off, and they didn't kill the branches or whatever. So there are plenty berries up in here."
Huge baskets of these sweet treats have been collected. Dent says it's hard and painful work, but it is worth it. He said the snakes stay away from this area because the bushes are so thorny.
