BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The debate over maximum penalties for heroin distribution broke out into a floor fight in the Louisiana House of Representatives on Thursday.
The reps added an amendment to increase the max penalties from 50 years to 99 years.
Democrats objected to the amendment, saying it was excessive.
Republicans said the message needs to be sent that heroin dealing won't be tolerated.
The House passed the bill by a vote of 54 to 33 vote, but amended it to make the 99-year cap on a second conviction of heroin distribution only.
