BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Mall of Louisiana and Baton Rouge General Medical Center - Bluebonnet are being joined by parents who say they want out of St. George and they are trying to encourage those who support separation to change their minds.
Better Together has now launched the "Withdraw Your Signature" campaign to help those who have already signed the petition remove their names.
"At a recent public meeting, a St. George proponent said, 'These children could attend school in a tent and that would be better than the schools they're attending now,'" said Lara Gautreaux. "As a parent of one of those children, my response is this - walk in my shoes before you decide it's better for my child to attend school in a tent."
The group said it wants residents who may have signed the St. George petition to know about what they say is a major consequence of the proposed breakaway school district.
They claim St. George would displace nearly 7,000 students and more than 5,300 children from the St. George area would have no place to go to school.
