ETBU softball takes Tyler Regional

FROM ETBU SPORTS INFORMATION:

TYLER, Texas – On a hot afternoon in Tyler playing in the first NCAA Division III Tyler Regional format, #6 East Texas Baptist University powered their way to the championship over Texas Lutheran University (33-9), 5-1.  It is the second regional championship for ETBU under Janae Shirley and the 42 wins becomes a program best surpassing the 41 wins from 2004.

"This was a great experience and I am so proud of my girls," says head coach Janae Shirley.  "It has been a phenomenal season with a phenomenal team and I am proud of them making it to this point and finishing through.  I am very excited for them."

Shelby Parker continued her hot streak in the circle picking up 22nd win of the year with two strikeouts.  She pitched no-hit softball through five innings giving up the first of only three hits in the sixth inning.  Named the Tyler Regional Tournament MVP, Parker won all three games for ETBU and giving up just two earned runs, recording 11 strikeouts, and having one shutout.

ETBU recorded 11 hits in the game as Jayme Perez, Alyssa Romero, and Lacy Liles all had two hits.  Romero, Jessica Bowden, Lindsey, and Kaitlyn Hollingshead all had one RBI.

Scoring in four of the seven innings played, ETBU put their first two runs on the board in the third inning capitalizing on two Texas Lutheran errors.  Lindsey singled to centerfield for the first run as Perez came in.  The second run came on a throwing error in Kayla Garcia's at-bat that allowed Romero to come in.

Bowden singled in the third run of the game in the fourth inning as Perez scored again in the game.  One more run was added in the sixth inning on Romero single down the left field line bringing in Mallory Westbrook.  Hollingshead rounded out the scoring for ETBU in the seventh inning sacrificing her at-bat with a bunt as Maranda Westbrooks scored from third base.

ETBU will now wait to see if they will host the super regional next weekend at Taylor Field as the NCAA will decide on Monday who will host the super regionals.
