Alleged mistress sues Plaquemines Parish sheriff

Updated:

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - The alleged former mistress of a local sheriff is now suing him, claiming he forced her to resign, had her arrested and then committed to a psychiatric hospital.

Carol Ruggles filed the lawsuit in federal court against Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Lonnie Greco.

In the suit, Ruggles claims she had a 16-month relationship with Greco and says he hired her at the sheriff's office so he could keep a closer eye on her.

When Ruggles ended the relationship, the lawsuit says she was given a choice to resign or be arrested on a charge of doctor shopping.

Ruggles resigned but state police later arrested her on the prescription charges.

The lawsuit says she was escorted by police to a psychiatric hospital soon after that arrest because the officers claimed she was suicidal.

A spokesperson for Plaquemines Parish released a statement saying, "a consensual relationship did exist between Sheriff Lonnie Greco and Carol Ruggles which the Sheriff has already acknowledged to the public and his family.

At no time during this consensual relationship did the Sheriff use the relationship as an advantage or leverage against Carol Ruggles....there was absolutely no gender discrimination or retaliation practiced with regard to Carol Ruggles's resignation.

Her motive to now pursue her current action is for a determination by the courts which the Sheriff and the Sheriff's Office will aggressively defend."
