METAIRIE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities have arrested and charged a suspect with murder in the death of Jaren Lockhart.
According to reports, Margaret Sanchez was picked up at her parents' house in Metairie by US marshals around 7 a.m.
She is charged with second-degree murder. She was booked into the jail in Kenner.
Lockheart, 22, of New Orleans, was reported missing on June 6, 2012. Her dismembered body washed ashore on a beach in Bay St. Louis, MS, over the course of several days.
The murder investigation gained renewed momentum in April due to new evidence. Officials transfered jurisdiction in the case from Hancock County, MS to the Kenner Police Department.
Glenn Grannan, lead investigator for the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, said the new information indicated a higher probability that Lockhart was killed in Kenner.
Investigators identified Sanchez and her boyfriend, Terry Speaks, as suspects, but they were unable to formally charge them due to a lack of evidence. The duo was arrested on unrelated charges during the weeks following Lockheart's death.
Sanchez was eventually released from the Tangipahoa Parish Prison, while Speaks remains in a New York federal prison on unrelated charges.
