Officials inspect Atchafalaya Basin Bridge after deadly fiery crash

IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Highway officials inspected a section of bridge that was possibly damaged in a deadly fiery crash.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said the right lane of I-10 East near Whiskey Bay on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge was closed for four hours Thursday to allow for the inspection.

DOTD said crews performed an analysis of the bridge between 8 a.m. and noon to make sure it was not compromised in any way. The DOTD crews wrapped up the inspection and traffic is flowing normal.

A husband and wife were killed in a fiery crash involving four 18-wheelers on Friday. They were identified as Ricky Chester, 56, and Karen Chester, of Ohio.

Louisiana State Police reported three of the big rigs burst into flames. I-10 East remained closed until Saturday afternoon.

The crash is still being investigated.
