(RNN) – Delores Dennison finally got to go to the prom, more than seven decades after she missed her own.

Escorted on the arm of her date, her great grandson Austin Dennison, the 89-year-old used her cane to shuffle balloons out of her way during the walk out at Parkway High School Prom.

Austin Dennison got the idea to ask his great grandmother from a teacher.

"Mr. Minnich told me that his older brother had taken his grandma to the prom," he told the Van Wert, OH, Times Bulletin. "I asked Grandma if she would be my date to the prom and she said that she would be honored. I told her that it would be my privilege."

Delores Dennison never graduated and thus never got to go to prom.

Like any girl would before the big day, she went dress shopping. Her date bought her a pearl necklace to complete the ensemble.

The pair ate at Bob Evans, her favorite restaurant, beforehand.

"They played the Frank Sinatra song, ‘I love the kisses of Delores.' Her husband (Edward) used to sing that song to her," Austin Dennison told the Times Bulletin.

Ever a gentleman, after a night of dancing, he made sure his date got home safe and sound.

"We got home shortly after 9 p.m., later than I go to bed these days," Delores Dennison said.
