BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office and the Baton Rouge Police Department are investigating a shooting that happened just before 1 p.m. in the rear parking lot of the Gaslite IV apartment complex on Y.A. Tittle Ave. in Tigerland.

Officials with EBRSO say narcotics detectives went to execute a search warrant at the apartment of 24-year-old Lionel Gilmore. The warrant was obtained after the purchase of heroin from the suspect.

Reports say when Gilmore left his apartment, detectives identified themselves as law enforcement and Gilmore fired shots at the agents. Detectives then returned fire and the suspect was shot.

He was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Gilmore faces three counts of attempted first degree murder of a police officer and one count of distribution of heroin.

Sheriff Sid Gautreaux says this is the third time law enforcement has been shot at this week during the course of their duties."We are going to continue to be vigilant in cracking down on crime and drugs," he stated. He also says many of these criminals have a total lack of regard for life. "Thank God no deputies were injured."

He says it is so important that residents contact law enforcement when they see something suspicious.

"[Criminals] don't fear going to jail, they don't fear dying. They don't respect anything or anyone. And it's gotten to the point now where they've turned their aggression not only to each other but onto law enforcement, and that's very very alarming," said Sheriff Gautreaux.
