Soldiers return from yearlong deployment for Operation Enduring Freedom

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Soldiers from the Louisiana National Guard 228th Military Police Company arrived to waiting families on Friday.

The 130 soldiers have spent the past year in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Nearly 80 of those 130 soldiers are from the Baton Rouge area.

The men and women spent the past year conducting security operations. The unit has previously participated in the state response and recovery operations of Hurricane Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike and Isaac, as well as the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010 and flood operations in 2011.

The soldiers also deployed overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008 and in support of humanitarian relief efforts to Haiti in 2010 and 2011.

They stepped off the plane in Baton Rouge just before noon.
