Group looks for support from lawmakers on mental health issues

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - May 1 kicks off Mental Health Awareness Month and one group held a rally at the Louisiana State Capitol on Thursday in hopes of bringing a positive light to mental health issues.

Mental Health America of Louisiana is an organization designed to show that mental health issues and addiction do not have to result in exclusion. Supporters gathered on the steps of the Capitol to get support from Louisiana lawmakers.

"Medicaid expansion was one of the things that we've been trying to fight for, that the health community has been asking for," said Mark Thomas, executive director of Mental Health America of Louisiana. "But if that's not the plan, if it keeps dying and that's not the plan, we're basically asking our leaders and our officials to develop a plan for us."
