ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Ascension Parish Relay for Life is Saturday May 3rd and hopes are high for a big turnout on what is expected to be a perfect weather day.

Organizers say the Relay begins at noon, Saturday at Lamar Dixon Expo Center 9039 S. St. Landry Avenue in Gonzales.

Last minute joiners are welcome, simply register when you join in the festivities, and you may also make a donation.  Teams of friends, family, or strangers grouped together will keep a continual stream of people walking, running, dancing, if they want to.

Thousands have shown up before for Ascension's fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  Anthony Ryan Auld, Project Runway design winner, sometimes attends, because he has survived testicular cancer.

WAFB's Donna Britt will speak around 6pm because of her breast cancer experience, and the fact that many members of her family battle cancer.

Around dusk, it is hoped that hundreds of candles burning in bags - 'luminaria' will be lighted to remember loved ones who've died from cancer.

You'll see names, and sometimes pictures attached to the bags.  Anyone who wants to make a donation may sponsor a luminaria and dedicate it.

The Ascension Relay for Life will end around 2 am Sunday morning.
