BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A move to make elevators in Louisiana safer cleared a legislative committee Wednesday morning.
The Senate Commerce Committee moved Senate Bill 602. It requires parishes that do not have national standards for elevator inspections to adopt them.
If a parish does not have a standard inspection regulation, this bill requires annual mechanical inspections.
"Right now, the state of Louisiana really doesn't have a good feel for the number of elevators, the number of conveyances out there, the type, the location, etc.," said John Karnash with the National Elevator Trade Association. "Frankly, our industry is very proud of our safety record, very proud of our equipment and our services."
The bill is authored by state Sen. Ben Nevers, D-Bogalusa. The bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration.
