BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
An investigation is underway into what caused a single-vehicle crash that left a woman dead Monday evening.
Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Patricia Martello, 51, of Independence. Troopers said the wreck happened on I-10 West near Siegen Lane around 8 p.m.
Tpr. Jared Sandifer with LSP reported the preliminary investigation showed the 2005 Honda Element that Martello was driving hit the guardrail on the right side of I-10 West.
He added the SUV bounced off the guardrail and went across all three lanes and slammed into the concrete wall on the other side, which caused the vehicle to spin and it ended up facing the opposite direction of travel on I-10 West.
Sandifer said detectives have not yet determined what caused the SUV to initially hit the guardrail. Investigators said it is believed Martello was not buckled.
She was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Sandifer added it is unknown if the driver was impaired at the time of the crash. As with any deadly crash on Louisiana highways, a sample of her blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
