Money Monday: Green Cleaning Solutions Recipes

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Cleaning products can be expensive and harmful to the environment. Here are a few recipes for green, less expensive cleaning solutions from the Habitat for Humanity Restore on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge.

10 essential green cleaning products:

White vinegar

Baking soda

Lemons and/or lemon juice


Olive oil

Ivory bar soap

Liquid dishwashing soap

Washing soda


Essential oils (lemon, lemon grass, lavender, eucalyptus)

All purpose cleaner for cleaning hard surfaces like countertops, kitchen floors, windows and mirrors

·         2 cups white distilled vinegar

·         2 cups water

·         20 drops of essential oil – for fragrance

For tougher cleaning problems you can heat the solution – it boosts the cleaning power

Furniture Polish

·         ¼ cup olive oil

·         ¼ cup white distilled vinegar

·         20 drops lemon essential oil or 2 teaspoons of lemon juice

Dip soft cloth in mixture and rub with grain. For water spots, rub well with toothpaste first.

Drain Opener

½ cup baking soda

½ cup vinegar

Pour baking soda down the drain follow with vinegar. Cover and let sit for 30 minutes. Then flush with boiling water. Much easier on pipes and the environment.
