SLIDELL, LA (WAFB) - A 19-year-old New Orleans man is behind bars after police say he took his 3-month-old son on a drug deal, in a stolen vehicle, was involved in a police chase, and rammed police vehicles to try to get away.

Slidell Police have been on the lookout for a stolen Jeep Liberty since late last week. An anonymous tip told the police that the Jeep was being driven around Slidell on a daily basis. Wednesday, an off-duty officer spotted the Jeep in a shopping center parking lot. Reports say when officers arrived, the Jeep quickly left the parking lot.

The driver, now identified as 19-year-old Jeovon Mitchell, got away after a brief chase after officers backed off due to "several innocent bystanders" in the shopping center parking lot.

On Thursday, the same off-duty Slidell Police officer spotted the stolen Jeep in a Slidell neighborhood, with Mitchell standing nearby.

Reports say Slidell Police and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office rushed to the scene. As police were arriving, Mitchell jumped into the Jeep and started to drive off.

"In a desperate attempt to get away, Mitchell rammed two police cars. After trapping himself between the two police cars, Mitchell refused to give-up, placed the Jeep in reverse, and continued to ram the officers. Fearing serious injury, the officers jumped out of their police cars. With Mitchell's foot still on the accelerator, and aggressively trying to get-away, officers were able to open the door of the Jeep and take Mitchell into custody. One officer received minor injuries during the incident," stated a news release from the Slidell Police Department.

After Mitchell was arrested, officers found his 3-month-old son in the backseat, unrestrained. Reports say the infant was not injured.

Officers also found several small bags of marijuana. The release states the officers believe Mitchell was conducting a drug transaction before the officers arrived.

The Department of Child and Family Services took custody of the child.

Mitchell is being held at the Slidell City Jail. He will eventually be taken to the St. Tammany Parish Jail where a bond will be set.
