Special meeting called to select interim Brusly police chief

BRUSLY, LA (WAFB) -

A special meeting in Brusly, LA is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. at the Brusly Town Hall to select an interim police chief.

The person selected will step in for current Chief Jamie Whaley, whose resignation takes effect Friday.

Whaley turned himself in to police on January 23 after a joint investigation by the FBI and Louisiana Inspector General revealed he allegedly had been using his department issued gas card for personal use.

According to the IG's investigation, Whaley filled up his personal vehicle and boat on 29 separate occasions between Jan. 2, 2013 and Jan. 3, 2014. The purchases totaled $1,122.75.

When investigators questioned Whaley, he admitted it and the following day, he issued a check from his personal account to cover the amount.

Whaley announced on April 14 that he was resigning from office effective April 25. He made the decision after a West Baton Rouge grand jury indicted him on charges of malfeasance in office and theft over $500.

In his resignation letter to Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Whaley wrote:

"Effective April 25, 2014, I, Jamie J. Whaley, do hereby tender my resignation as Chief of Police for the Town of Brusly."

Brusly Police Chief Jamie Whaley pleaded guilty April 17, 2014 to one count of malfeasance in office and was sentenced to 18 months of probation.

The district attorney's office dismissed the theft charge. The only stipulation to the sentence is he cannot run in the replacement election for police chief.
