Children's Hospital holds news conference to address public concerns

After a medical journal article spawned reports that surprised and alarmed some in the community, Children's Hospital held a news conference Thursday to address public concerns about a deadly fungal outbreak that resulted in the deaths of five patients in 2008 and 2009.

Children's said the fungal infection mucormycosis was not the primary cause of death for any of the patients, ages 35 days to 13 years old, all of whom had compromised immune systems.

The hospital also said it immediately implemented improved linen sterilization and management processes.

The fungus is believed to have been introduced into the hospital on linens from an outside company.
