2 students arrested after threat of school shooting

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

According to officials with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, two Westdale Middle School students have been arrested for terrorizing after making threats on Instagram.

Officials say the two students made threats Wednesday night about a shooting at the school, and deputies believe the two incidents are not related.

The sheriff's office received a call Wednesday evening about a 15-year-old 8th grader that made posts on Instagram in reference to a shooting at the school Thursday.

The second call to the sheriff's office happened Thursday morning about a 14-year-old 8th grader that also made a post on Instagram about a shooting Thursday.

Deputies with the School Drug Task Force went out to the school Thursday morning and took both students into custody. Neither had any weapons. The 15-year-old stated he made the post as a joke, and the 14-year-old gave no reason.

"This is absolutely not the kind of joke that you make. We are going to take any sort of threat like this very seriously," said EBRSO spokesperson Casey Rayborn Hicks.

Some parents took extra precautions today and took their children out of class.

"We've seen more of this sort of thing in the last few years, whereas maybe the threat was made verbally in the past or just to a friend, now somebody is posting this on the internet and there are hundreds, sometimes thousand of people that view this, so it's more likely it will be brought to our attention," Hicks said.

Both students were booked into Juvenile Detention.

Students with information concerning this incident or similar incidents are encouraged to notify a school administrator, contact the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office at 225-389-5000 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (225) 344- STOP or (225) 344-7867. Students can also text "CS225" plus their message to CRIMES (274637).

"Parents need to be very involved with their children and social media. They need to be aware of what their child is putting on social media, who they're talking to, and they need to make sure that their child understands how serious this is," Hicks said.

Terrorizing is a felony that carries up to 15 years in prison.
