HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - State Police is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect.
Officials say a deputy shot and killed Michael J. Nichols, 48, during an incident at a home located in Hammond.
"Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's deputy responded to a domestic call at a home on Deborah Street in the Happy Woods subdivision," Trooper Greg Marchand, explained. "Upon arrival, the suspect was actively hurting the [his mother] with a deadly weapon and would not stop."
Deputies believed Barbara Nichols was in imminent danger of losing her life. That's when deputies shot and killed Michael.
"Barbara Nichols was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries," Trooper Marchand, added. "No deputies were injured during the encounter."
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office requested for the State Police to investigation, which is standard procedure when a deputy discharges a weapon. The case remains under investigation. The results will be forwarded to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney's Office.
