Baker program helping to bring community together

BAKER, LA (WAFB) -

The City of Baker is behind a big effort to bring families together through an initiative called "Building Bridges in Baker."

City leaders have planned a series of events to promote community unity.

Mayor Harold Rideau said it began with a little friendly competition between city workers.

"This thing started off as a softball game against police and public works. They are excited about it," Rideau said.

The city is getting ready for the first event, a 5K, scheduled on April 26 at 8 a.m.

Registration begins at 7 a.m.

    A man accused of an attempted armed robbery Thursday night was shot in the process and died early Friday morning, according to investigators. The Baton Rouge Police Department reported Kylin Spencer, 19, died at the hospital from gunshot wounds.
