HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - A Houma father is in custody in connection with the deaths of his two young children, according to Houma Police.

Romell Welsh faces manslaughter charges after two-year-old Romell Welsh Jr. and his one year-old sister Ro'miya died of smoke inhalation from a fire on March 15.

Investigators say Welsh and the children's mother, Vaneshia Valentine left the kids home alone before the fire started.

Valentine was arrested at a local car wash on Grand Caillou Road March 26 and taken into custody without incident. She was also charged with manslaughter and possession of marijuana.

Welsh turned himself in Friday because he wanted to do the right thing, police said.

The fire destroyed the home in the 500 block of Hobson St. Fire investigators say the blaze started in a garbage can in the kitchen.
