BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A law enforcement officer arrested on drug and malfeasance charges is believed to have taken drugs from cases he investigated.
Arrest reports indicated Maj. Mervin Jerome Fontenot with the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office had crack cocaine and prescription painkillers on him when he was taken into custody, the same drugs stolen from cases he worked as a narcotics investigator.
Fontenot was arrested Tuesday on charges of possession with intent to distribute and malfeasance in office. Authorities said he had the following drugs at the time of his arrest:
Oxycodone (45 pills)
Valium (28 pills)
Codeine (15 pills)
Crack Cocaine (1 gram)
Officials said Fontenot was already on suspension due to an internal investigation for a related matter.
They added he resigned from his position prior to being arrested.
