BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A bill that would repeal provisions under Louisiana's "crimes against nature" statue has cleared a House committee with a vote of 9-6.

House Bill 12 amends the current law to remove language relative to sexual acts between members of the same sex. With the revision, the law will only pertain to acts of rape, acts committed with juveniles, or bestiality.

"It is great to see bipartisan support for this measure, and we are extremely grateful that Rep. Smith is willing to carry HB 12 through the legislature," Tim S. West, President of Equality Louisiana (EQLA), said. "Getting this outdated law off the books is long overdue."

Representatives for the Louisiana Family Forum and several individuals were among those who spoke against the bill.

WAFB's Jim Shannon will have a full recap of the meeting as well as the next step for the bill coming up at 5 and 6 p.m.
