DUTCHTOWN, LA (WAFB) -

Students at Dutchtown High are allowed back inside the school's gym after a bat infestation.

School officials said they successfully removed a couple hundred bats by putting sheet metal up behind the gutters, trapping them inside. The Department of Health and Hospitals and Wildlife and Fisheries inspected the gym and signed off on the decision to reopen the building.

For whatever reason, Mexican free-tailed bats (also known as Brazilian free-tailed bats) settled in the gym and were not very eager to leave. The gym was closed because guano - bat droppings - can eventually pose a health hazard.

School officials said there was never a threat to students or staff.
