5th grader arrested for having unloaded handgun at school

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A 5th grade student was arrested at Capitol Elementary School in Baton Rouge after a .45 caliber weapon was found in his backpack.

Officials say the gun was unloaded and it did not have a clip. Officials with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office say an anonymous student told a school administrator that the 10-year-old male had the gun.

The gun was found around 3:30 p.m.

The 10-year-old student will be charged with illegal possession of a firearm on a school campus.

The gun was listed as stolen, and the student stated he found it at home. EBRSO is not aware of any threats made at the school. This incident is still under investigation.
