GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Authorities are investigating an apparent murder and attempted suicide that left a woman dead and her husband in serious condition early Thursday morning.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office reported Alejandra Orozco, 36, of Gonzales, was shot and killed by her husband, Gerardo Lua, 38, who then shot himself. Lua is listed in critical condition.
Investigators said the shooting happened at Cobb Trailer Park on Roddy Road in Gonzales just after midnight.
Lt. Col. Bobby Webre with APSO said deputies were called out to the trailer park on a medical complaint and when they arrived on the scene, the couple's teenage son led them to a back room.
According to Webre, Orozco was found lying on the floor unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head and Lua was lying next to her, also with a head wound, but he was still breathing. Webre added a revolver was found on the carpet next to Lua.
Investigators said the couple had been married 20 years and according to the son, had been having problems. Detectives said Orozco told her husband in February that she wanted a divorce and moved in with a new boyfriend. They said she later returned to the home.
Deputies reported the couple's son had left to go out with friends and returned home to find his parents on the floor in the back room.
The shooting remains under investigation.
